Digital Model

Process:

[The digital model was built by four components: Roof; Cylinder form; Frames; Rectangular building blocks.]

[Longer time has been spent on building the cylinder frames, a variety of approaches have been experienced and ultimately the most appropriate methods are applied both 'Panelling Tools' and 'Loft' tools in Rhino to complete the form.]

[Laser Cut Panels: Two acrylic panels in 400 x 400 mm to cut the base for the project.]

[3D Print File: 'Booleanunion' tool in Rhino has been applied to ensure it is a one completely closed solid polysurface. Then the file was saved as STL file and ready to be check and print in the workshop - Total printing time is 11.5 hours with 1.5 mm thickness after consultation with the staff in the workshop.]

Assembly

[Remove the support components from the 3D print work.]

[Rough string surface has been found on the roof part (The support surface since the model has been printed up-side-down to reduce the amount of the supports. Paint scraper and sanding papers have been used to remove these base support. After clean the 3D model, the last step is to assembly the acrylic base and place the 3d model on top of the base.]

Reflection
There are some challenges have been faced during the process of making this model. The first is to test the appropriate method in building the digital model due to the complexity of the forms. Then is the removal of the rough support surface on the 3D printed work since it is the first time that I applied the 3D print technique in the model building. The plastic strings are hard and difficult to remove, and caution of using print scraper was taken seriously.
